Self Harm

Self harm or non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), can include cutting, burning, pinching, or scratching, and is commonly associated with intense emotions, sometimes called emotion dysregulation. Self harm most often starts in early to mid adolescence and can persist for years.
When the environment is stressful and emotions are heightened, some people may try to cope with emotions via self harm. Self harm can also be a way to communicate pain, receive help from others, and validate the experience of intense emotions. Self harm can also be part of suicidal behaviors.

Individuals with a history of self harm/NSSI often benefit from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). However, other treatments may also be considered when the function of the behavior is analyzed in sessions.
